Topic : Vicarious Trauma And Self Care For The Professional

Description :
Working with clients who are survivors of trauma can be both very rewarding and difficult work. However, one thing is certain, doing this work will change us! This interactive workshop will look at: 1) how professionals are impacted by empathically engaging with our clients’ trauma material; 2) the ways in which the secondary trauma impacts the worker in different parts of the “developing self”; 3) the factors that put workers at greater risk for experiencing vicarious trauma; and 4) the strategies for transforming vicarious trauma. Emphasis will be on helping to normalize workers’ experiences and in making a commitment to self by developing individual action plans.

As a consultant and presenter, Brother Harris has provided lectures, keynote addresses, workshops, seminars and trainings from coast-to-coast. His work has earned him national acclaim in the areas of alcohol, tobacco, and substance abuse prevention. Brother Harris has worked to devise interactive, culturally-based tools and training sessions which have successfully coached thousands of youth and adults around the nation to become better leaders and advocates in their communities. These opportunities have created teachable moments for youth and adults in the areas of character development, relationship building, violence prevention, conflict resolution, and cultural reclamation.
Brother Harris’ most recent lecture series, “Beats, Booze, Butts, Blunts & Bullets—Dropping Bombs In Our Neighborhoods” prepares young people and community leaders to tackle predatory marketing and promotional tactics that manufacturers use to lure customers and why it is important to take control of their well-being. This presentation will draw attention to the deadly impact that music, alcohol, tobacco products and bullets are having upon our youth culture which has the potential to predispose them to a life time of addictions. …………. .
Topic: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD): A Newly Emerging & Indiscernible Disability That May Hinder Treatment Outcome

Description :
Nationally FASD is estimated to affect 1 in every 100 live births every year. FASD is a cause of intellectual disabilities and birth defects. This workshop will address the unique role that educated clinicians can have in this 100% preventable condition. After completing this workshop, the participant should be able to recognize the presence of symptoms of FASD in their treatment populations, refer them for further evaluation, and modify their treatment approaches for working with children, adolescents, and adults with FASD. Additionally, they will be able to recognize clients with a high risk of giving birth to a child with FASD and use brief intervention to encourage the clients to avoid alcohol during pregnancy.
Topic : Helping Addicts Recover: The Spiritual Perspective

Description :
In this workshop we will begin with some background to the idea of helping alcoholics and addicts deal with their addiction. This will be followed with a brief discussion comparing a psychological and a spiritual approach to recovery. Therefore, a determination of what the problem is exactly. Also, to be examined will be open-mindedness in successfully treating patients and included are some very specific things we can do in assessing spirituality and providing spiritual interventions for our patients. Additionally, the material will include information covering the characteristics of those who will be effective in spiritual counseling and the philosophy and spiritual program designed for Haymarket Center.

Illinois leads the nation in offering services to one of society’s fastest growing and hardest to serve population—persons returning to the community after incarceration. In this workshop the process which makes Illinois the cutting edge in this delivery system will be discussed. The informal panel will give insight into services offered inside an institution as well as those available upon release.
