Topic : Eating Disorders and Addictions: Food For Thought

Description :

In this workshop, the speaker will discuss the prevalence of eating disorders and their similarities to chemical addictions. Discussion will include but is not limited to diagnostic classification, assessment tools, co-occurrence considerations with alcohol and drug addictions and treatment planning. This workshop will assist professionals in: 1) diagnosing individuals with anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating; 2) understanding the similarities with addictive processes; 3) defining screening and assessment practices; 4) explaining common characteristics with co-occurring substance abuse/dependence; and 5) understanding treatment planning issues.


Topic : The Basics of Spirituality

Description :

This workshop will be made up of three parts; each part will discuss an important part of basic spirituality as it relates to helping individuals in addiction treatment gain an understanding of the essential elements of spiritual recovery. In the first part we will discuss the three basic facets of spirituality – honesty, contentment, and humility. In the second part, we will examine the conception of open mindedness in context of the spirituality of the program.
In the third part, the implications of the 3 rd and 11 th Steps of AA in counseling will be discussed.


Topic: Understanding and Treating Sexual Addiction/Compulsivity

Description :

Sexual addiction, manifested by a wide variety of behaviors, and the most current epidemic of cybersex addictions, also called the “Crack Cocaine of the 21 st Century”, are presenting with ever increasing frequency.

Cindy will review the signs and types of both sex and
cybersex addictions and compulsivity. Screening tools, specific treatment strategies, practical relapse prevention techniques and treatment resources will be discussed during this presentation.


Topic : In Search of the Conscience: Counseling Clients With Antisocial Personality Disorder

In many counseling facilities across the country, staff can’t wait for clients with antisocial personality disorders to be discharged! In addition, those clients who are dually diagnosed, i.e. antisocial personality disorders and substance use disorders, are often involved in a triangulated revolving door syndrome – drug use and prison followed by reincarceration – without ever being treated for the thought processes, which are the hallmark of antisocial personality disorder and precursor for drug use. Topics to be discussed: causes and history of antisocial personality disorder; helping adolescents avoid graduating from conduct disorder to antisocial personality disorder; antisocial personality disorder as male depression; strategies for counseling and treating this disorder; and helping families cope



Topic : Female DUI Offenders – For the Sake of Public Safety and Her Children, We Must Intervene!!

Description :

DUI arrests are the largest category of alcohol-related crimes bringing women into the criminal justice system. Female fatal crashes are on the rise, too often with children in the car. Using gender competent evidence-based approaches, you can reduce re-arrests, increase public safety, interrupt addictive patterns, and launch recovery for women and their families. This experiential skill building workshop will cover research on major gender differences, what works, what doesn’t and why; research on arrests, re-arrests, barriers to recovery and addiction interruption techniques. Addiction counselors, DUI evaluators, probation officers, bring your frustrations and questions to this lively workshop on female DUI offenders!!

Note: Bike racks available at corner of Washington & Morgan.
